In June 2021, the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) announced that they were joining cOAlition S and implementing the principles of Plan S, including full and immediate open access to the research it funds.
The FRQ are the first Canadian funding organization and the first public funding organization in North America to join cOAlition S, which was founded in 2018 as a group of 11 European funding organizations committed to advancing open access, supported by the European Research Council (ERC) and the European Commission (see “Plan S and cOAlition S”). It has since expanded to include members from Africa, the Middle East, and the US (see “Plan S Update: The Expanding Membership of cOAlition S”).

Les FRQ sont le premier organisme de financement canadien et le premier organisme de financement public en Amérique du Nord à se joindre à cOAlition S, qui a été fondée en 2018 en tant que groupe de 11 organismes de financement européens engagés à faire progresser libre accès, soutenu par le Conseil européen de la recherche et la Commission européenne (voir « Plan S et cOAlition S »). Il s’est depuis élargi pour inclure des membres d’Afrique, du Moyen-Orient et des États-Unis (voir « Mise à jour du Plan S : l’élargissement de l’adhésion de la cOAlition S »).

La 14e Semaine internationale du libre accès se déroule du 25 au 31 octobre 2021 et le thème de cette année est « L’importance de notre façon d’ouvrir la connaissance : construisons l’équité structurelle ». Ce thème a été choisi pour s’aligner sur la recommandation de l’UNESCO sur la science ouverte (voir « La Recommandation de l’UNESCO sur la science ouverte »), qui met en avant l’importance de l’équité dans l’avancement d’érudition qui est ouvert par défaut (Fandel 2021).

The 14th annual International Open Access Week runs from October 25–31, 2021, and this year’s theme is “It Matters How We Open Knowledge: Building Structural Equity.” This theme was chosen to align with the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science (see “UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science”), which “powerfully articulates and centers the importance of equity in pursuing a future for scholarship that is open by default” (Fandel 2021).

In March 2021, The University of California (UC) announced a “breakthrough” open access (OA) agreement with Elsevier, the world’s largest scientific publisher (2021). Under the agreement, all articles with a lead author based at UC will be OA upon publication, and researchers at UC will have access to read articles in Elsevier journals.
